📠 her-pan TMF Chatbox (The Music Factory, 2003) was my first experience online and this was something so new to me. A chatbox to talk with people online... nothing more, nothing less. You could really make friends online. During this time of year, schools and parents warned you a lot about not meeting people online, as you might be dealing with a catfish/fake profile. Other than that, Hyves was pretty big in the Netherlands with more than 10 mil accounts in 2010 1655730707 == == 📠 happy Cu2-er While being a teenager, thé place to be on the internet in the Netherlands was Cu2. A place where you could make your own web page and have a personal guestbook/message board. The structure of Cu2 was very open, you basically needed to make your own page yourself, using HTML and CSS. Because of this, parallel websites emerged with collections of gifs and example snippets of HTML and CSS. It was a great way to combine being social online while learning about the web! 1653469270 == 📠 happy Cu2-er While being a teenager, thé place to be on the internet in the Netherlands was Cu2. I then went to the BfP forum, and learnt about new forums which everyone said were for anime nerds, so I went there: Anime Academy. From this I joined IRC groups related to anime and gaming, and got into Warcraft 3 and DotA, which led me down a path of Dota gaming fandom and gaming spaces for almost two decades. I recently(-ish) found a discussion of the anime academy forum and review site where a lot of people were coming back to reminisce as someone made a wordpress that attempted to salvage some of the old content: https://theanimeacademy.wordpress.com/all-about-the-new-anime-academy/comment-page-1/#comment-412 1650536634 == 📠 mal i pestered my parents into letting me join moshi monsters, club penguin, bin weevils, toontown, moviestarplanet, stardoll, if it was advertized on cartoon network i wanted to join it. but i was always too scared of stranger danger to ever really talk to anybody online. i do remember chatting to another user on moshi monsters though - i was about 7 or 8 and i didn't want to give away any information about myself in case something bad happened. so when they asked me where i lived i said "mars". later i felt like i was involved in communities online in tumblr but i was basically always a lurker and an archaeologist in defunct communities. sometimes i would send people lengthy anonymous asks because i didn't have a tumblr account.
i don't know when i started properly talking to strangers online...probably not till i got on discord. 1646934924 == 📠 del I spent so much time in IRC and various text-based roleplay servers, writing up lengthy descriptions that probably nobody else looked at but I loved them. I played my first D&D games in IRC as a teenager with no idea what I was doing and only one book. It was great. 1646928699 == 📠 Neonriser Back in high school I played Mabinogi a lot. During that time not only I enjoyed going through the plot of the game's first three chapters, but also dungeon crawling with people who would go around helping others for the heck of it. One time, our party decided to have a big feast near the boss room entrance so we can talk about our lives. I remember that one of our party members said they were writing a script for some romantic comedy. I think Runescape was the one I interact with the most. I mean, I remember this one in particular, because I did tons of quests exploring the world but I usually preferred to stay inside the bank doing deals with people. I remember customizing the font with colors and animations to talk and do business with stupid things. I never got to a high level, so I couldn't sell good stuff or get the armor I wanted. I kinda suck as a player, pretty average. The armor was red. Beautiful, if I remember correctly, I needed to kill a dragon or to mine some sort of dragon rocks. Never happened. 1644860725 == 📠 eunalee When I was in elementary school, I was used to play « animal farm » which you raise Poketmon like animal.
