Dear applicant, Thank you for applying for a residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie and for the confidence you have shown in the institute. However, I regret to tell you that we decided to not select your application for inclusion in next year’s programme. We received some 550 applications for the 30 available positions. These applications, as well as the work submitted by the candidate artists, designers, curators, architects and critics, have been of a consistently high standard. While we turned down your application, I hope you understand that this does not mean that we considered your work as not worthwhile or of an unsatisfactory quality. Indeed, we seldom find ourselves rejecting applications on such grounds, for we highly appreciate the artistic individuality of all the applicants and the work they submit. The selection procedure attempts to strike a balance between different perspectives as regards the working specialism, age, gender, cultural background and artistic position of the applicants. This is in accordance with the Van Eyck's aspiration to a multiform character; to be a post academic institute where many artistic languages are spoken. You may be reassured to hear that almost each year we also accept applicants who apply for a second or third time. So please consider applying again in the future. Your application will be welcome and will be reviewed with equal interest and concentration. Sincere regards, Lex ter Braak Director Van Eyck and Chairman of the Selection Committee
