Carl Jung used a galvometer in his "word association" experiments (1907), which registered the response to lowering of electrical resistance in the body; here “feeling tone curves” are recorded on a roll of paper. As each word was uttered a stop-watch would record the response and the next word would follow. The result was a series of lines forming “peaks” and troughs which together could be read as patterns of behaviour.
