SIMON: There are a few things to do,

1) [done] CHANGE FROM: Introduction: The Foundations of Cybernetic Discourse

TO: Introduction: The Foundations of a Cybernetic Discourse This will mean copying and replacing the page.

2) [done] CHANGE the order of contents

FROM: PREFACE → Chapter Outline → Introduction: The Foundations of a Cybernetic Discourse → Notes on Method

TO: PREFACE → Introduction: The Foundations of a Cybernetic Discourse → Chapter Outline → Notes on Method + change links at the base of the pages

Discuss title letters in colour (on the Main Page?), which might make the title "pop" --- not sure if this will work, but the coloured letters could make a space between the black text and background .

The Fabulous Loop de Loop A cybernetic discourse as read through seven feedback machines A project by Steve Rushton

Floop Agenda June- July

June 9-21+ Steve Edit Floop (responding to Sol and Kate's feedback)

June 21 -25(+) Sol reads, gives commentary and corrects whole text

July 1 Kate reads, gives commentary and corrects Lacan chapters

July 14 -1 August final corrections.

Hi Simon

I'm currently in the process of getting readers-editors to work on Floop. After doing some editing and reviewing of the text I realised I need to move the chapter → Bateson’s Negentropic Discourse Matrix up into the THE STRUCTURAL DIFFERENTIAL section

So.. the new contents would read like this:[done] PREFACE

   → Chapter Outline
→ Introduction: The Foundations of Cybernetic Discourse
   → Notes on Method

THE GOVERNOR

   → The Vapour Engine

→ Vibrations  → A (Proto) Cybernetic Explanation  → From Schizmogenesis to Feedback  → Negative Entropy – Bateson - Freud  → Cybernetics - Dynamic Psychology M. SPECULARIX (The Cybernetic Tortoise)  → The Body in Pieces  → The Tortoise and Homeostasis SEER (SEquence Extrapolating Robot)  → Play Like an Idiot  → Odd or Even?  → Poe's Purloined Letter  → Lacan Builds a Circuit THE STRUCTURAL DIFFERENTIAL (The Anthropometre)  → Why “The Map is NOT the Territory”  → Bateson’s Negentropic Discourse Matrix THE ELECTROPSYCOMETER (The E-Meter)  → Time-Binding and Time-Scrambling THE HOMEOSTAT  → Steps Towards a (Media) Ecology THE PORTAPAK: SONY VIDEOROVER DV-2400 (1967)  → The Fabulous Loop de Loop  → Double Bind to Video Therapy  → Double Bind's Double life Conclusion: The Last Loop de Loop?

This would mean moving the text and changing the links to the previous-following chapters at the base of the page. Wanna skype/jitsi or meet for a coffee to chat about it?[done]

Small things to do 11-6-21 1) The The Tortoise and Homeostasis needs a link to Bateson’s Negentropic Discourse Matrix at the base of the page and a link to the preceding chapter - done 2) Is there any chance of making the contents list on the left of the screen invisible UNLESS you scroll over it? Could there be one line on this left column- Fabulous Loop de Loop contents - which becomes visible when scrolling over it? working on this - have asked Andre to install an extension, if this isn't suitable I can try using some javascript to hide/show the menu

QUESTIONS 4 STEVE: 10/06/21=

Is this page still needed? Can I delete it? https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/A_Parallel_Text (We have all the Parallel Texts already listed under the Category: Parallel Text)

Yes, it can go! The preface, and the whole entry page is looking great!

==

"USER GUIDE" is usually the first document you read to learn the basics of how to use a machine. But on Floop, the USER's GUIDE comes after the CHAPTER OUTLINE Is what on Floop actually a USER's GUIDE, or more a description of A PARALLEL TEXT? Should the title really be "USER GUIDE", or perhaps "A note to the reader"?

How to collapse these into one title: User Guide: The Fabulous Loop de Loop Chapter Outline

Could they be called Preface?

YES! done!

Hey Simon, it is BEAUTIFUL, by the way! Thanks Steve :)

UPDATE: Wednesday -9-6-21

first box - image of whole loop; done Headed: PREFACE done linking to three pages= 1) Chapter outline done 2) introduction done 3) User Guide- (or maybe change this to Notes on Method, what do you think?). Yes - I prefer Notes on Method as it is not really a USER GUIDE anymore - done Note;the image for PREFACE could be a tad bigger done

Steve notes 8-6-21 Thanks Simon. That is looking so much better. and every time you add something new possibilities are suggested. So on that basis– Two points:

One -- chapter outline, introduction, user guide

Two -- image in the 1st box

one >> How to collapse these into one title: User Guide: The Fabulous Loop de Loop Chapter Outline Could they be called Preface?

yes they could

but I think there is another approach

Also to consider. The introduction follows on from the Chapter Outline.

+) Introduction also needs to be in the "loop" (the first "box")
+) there needs to be a link at the end of chapter outline which takes the reader to introduction.

STEVE SUGGESTS So perhaps it would be best if the first box read

CHAPTER OUTINE- INTRODUCTION

which leads us to a section with three chapters*(?) (as with THE GOVERNOR AND M. SPECULARIX) wherein we find CHAPTER OUTLINE, INTRODUCTION, USER GUIDE (the user guide has explanation of parallel texts and notes on methodology). CHAPTER OUTLINE and INTRODUCTION, have links at the bottom which allows the reader to follow in order. Parallel text has link to index of parallel texts..

So USER GUIDE is a little 'free floating' text within the introduction section

In this way we retain the continuity of form and visual logic established so far (the machine, which breaks into parts)

Sure, this makes sense. So the first box represents the Chapter Outline, Introduction and User Guide, which has the same click flow as the other boxes (leading the reader to a break-down of its components).

  • (?) I'll need to make a new page (a la THE GOVERNOR, M SPECULARIX) with a grid of three columns.

What should this page be called? To avoid redundancy, perhaps a title like "Chapter Outline, Introduction, User Guide" shouldn't be used (the name of the page automatically appears at the top of the page in MediaWiki).

Two So, following the same visual logic THE IMAGE: on the first box should be all 7 machines in a circle, like this drawing (meta diagram) I made

https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/File:Floop_meta_diagram.jpg. The viewer would then see the 7 machines and realise this is a miniature version of the screen they are seeing. They would understand the structure instantly. This image would be like the top half of the image currently in the first square (minus the parralel text box and with the machines arranged in order.). Bingo. A nice solution :)

Feel free to call if any of this needs clarification: 061 966 4265

housekeeping I'm moving this page to the sidebar: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/A_Parallel_Text This is for housekeeping purposes - we'll need to go through these and delete duplicates of parallel texts that are linked to in the margins of Floop.

We have these parallel texts indexed on this page (under Category:Parallel Text): https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Category:Parallel_Text

We will need to search and destroy ones on the former page "A Parallel Text" where they were transcluded.

Steve writes: I think we are going to have to change the links to the chapters on the Chapter Outline page. "W. Grey Walter – The Body in Pieces" still may give the impression that Grey Walter is the author. These were placeholders at an earlier stage (when the text was a collection of word files). I think we should cut the names to read: The Vapour Engine; Vibrations; [...] The Body in Pieces; The Tortoise and Homeostasis &c

https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Chapter_Outline SB adds: It would be good to also talk about how images are working on this page - at the top it is a little cluttered at present, which could mean we need less (or more?) images. Style thoughts/questions (this can become a section in the Mediawiki Cheatsheet page)

PT > Floop

To include or exclude names? >>> should reflect the name of the chapter

Names are excluded in the sidebar, and in chapter titles. Links back to chapters should reflect the title of the chapter.

so,

Alfred Korzybski and William Burroughs – Time-Binding and Time-Scrambling

becomes

Time-Binding and Time-Scrambling

A PT (still attached to another PT?) example of the difference between the two styles: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/FEELING_TONE-CURVES

Floop > PT (the following has been added to the Floop Style Guide) https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Floop_style_guide

Certain symbols (such as &, ?, #, + and /) should not be used when making PT titles. Using these can run the risk of producing 404-page-not-found errors when Mediawiki rewrites URLS.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Short_URL#Troubleshooting

Dashes can be useful here, but there are three different types:

Em dashes — En dashes – and hyphens - We will only use en dashes and hyphens in titles of links between PT and Floop.

e.g. TECHNOLOGIES OF SELF–WILLIAM BURROUGHS CONTROL SOCIETIES – DELEUZE WRITING––CALVINO–SOFTWARE–CYBERNETICS

These can be used in different ways, but a consistency between the methods will make it easier for the reader to know what type of PT is being visited. Also, at some times hyphens are used for compound nouns and adjectives (for grammatical accuracy), such as "tone-curves" in the PT titled:

FEELING TONE-CURVES

To establish a difference between different types of PTs and maintain linguistic clarity, I propose the following syntax;

For PTs that link a topic to a particular agent of the discourse TOPIC – AGENT e.g. TECHNOLOGIES OF SELF – WILLIAM BURROUGHS

Or for topics/agents/topics that link to several other topics and agents that sometimes form a group (I'm calling this a "compound", see below), use one en dash, with a space on either side ( – ): SUBJECT – TOPIC e.g. WRITING – CALVINO-SOFTWARE-CYBERNETICS

For compounds, use hyphens to separate parts: SUBJECT-SUBJECT-SUBJECT TOPIC-TOPIC-TOPIC AGENT-AGENT-AGENT

or any combination, separated only by hyphens:

SUBJECT-TOPIC-AGENT

e.g. TECHNOLOGIES OF SELF – WILLIAM BURROUGHS CONTROL SOCIETIES – DELEUZE WRITING – CALVINO-SOFTWARE-CYBERNETICS

Numbered lists in text* Indent these using Mediawiki syntax

  • This section includes a numbered list that is broken up, interspersed with paragraphs and images.

https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Gregory_Bateson_%E2%80%93_Bateson%E2%80%99s_Negentropic_Discourse_Matrix#FIRST_PRINCIPLES_IN_A_.28MEDIA.29_ECOLOGY

How Mediawiki produces automatically numbered lists: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Mediawiki_cheatsheet#Main_body_numbered_lists

Mediawiki syntax means that a list is automatically numbered, but the list begins at 1. If you break the line, the list begins at 1 again. So for this reason, I am using p.indent to indent this particular list.

Similar issue with this section (a breakdown of the Structural Differential's parts: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Alfred_Korzybski_and_Gregory_Bateson_%E2%80%93_Why_%E2%80%9CThe_Map_is_NOT_the_Territory%E2%80%9D#THE_STRUCTURAL_DIFFERENTIAL_.281924.29 (sidenote: this section seems to have incomplete text " This is followed by (feeds through to)[2] Higher Level Abstractions [3]")

And also with this section (Tape recorder 1,2,3 description): https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Alfred_Korzybski_and_William_Burroughs_%E2%80%93_Time-Binding_and_Time-Scrambling#FROM_THE_INVISIBLE_GENERATION_TO_ELECTRONIC_REVOLUTION

Alphabetical lists in text Indent these using p.indent globally

Questions for next meeting:

Style of quotes & recaps

Quotes that begin chapters Many chapters begin with quotes. Should there be a consistent style for these?

e.g.

Author: "quote" (like on this page: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Kenneth_Craik_%E2%80%93_A_(Proto)_Cybernetic_Explanation

or

"Quote" Author – Book

      • add footnote reference to exact book

add this to stylesheet

(like on this page: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/W._Ross_Ashby_and_Gregory_Bateson_%E2%80%93_Steps_Towards_a_(Media)_Ecology)

Large quotes in body of text

e.g.https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Introduction:_The_Foundations_of_Cybernetic_Discourse

Should these be indented, say when they get to be more than three lines long? More than 50 words > indent

Recaps Some chapters begin with a recap, e.g: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Gregory_Bateson_%E2%80%93_Bateson%E2%80%99s_Negentropic_Discourse_Matrix https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Jacques_Lacan_%E2%80%93_Lacan_Builds_a_Circuit:_Cybernetics_and_the_Unconscious

Could recaps be styled in the same way as quotes that begin chapters?

To briefly recap > Brief recap: Make recaps more visually distinct

Schemes/elaborations Some sections of the text are illustrations of schemes and elaborations in the form of alphanumeric characters (e.g. Lacan's +/- and X schematic). They get a little lost in the text (visually), and need to stand out more from the body for better readability as an illustration.

Should the elaboration made in this section become an image (like the Lacan +/- image)? Or just indented? > Indent these https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Gregory_Bateson_%E2%80%93_Bateson%E2%80%99s_Negentropic_Discourse_Matrix#AB-BA-ABABA...CODIFICATION-EVALUATION.5B24.5D

Thumbnail images As more images are added in thumbnails, this takes up space in the margin. Which is not a bad thing, but some adjustment of image sizes may be needed (to discuss) e.g. https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Radical_Software,_Guerrilla_Television_and_Gregory_Bateson_%E2%80%93_The_Fabulous_Loop_de_Loop#ORGANIC_UNITY_.E2.80.93_APPROPRIATE_TECHNOLOGY

Toplinks, to include, or to exclude? This section has a "toplink", an upwards arrow which, when clicked, takes the reader back to the top of the page. Necessary? https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Samuel_Butler_%E2%80%93_The_Vapour_Engine#EREWHON

The syntax for producing a toplink, placed at the bottom of the text, justified right:

Hyperlinked text At points the text refers to itself. A section of a chapter mentions another section of a chapter where a topic is elaborated upon. Should these become hyperlinks, or is this opening Pandora's box? > general feeling is to not include lots of hyperlinks - allow the reader to discover the text at their own pace

Meeting 28/08/20

Proof of concept tests:

The Annotation: Test out ways of including annotation entries into margins on Floop: 1. brute force (make annotation as a page, transclude annotation page on The Annotation and on target page, add HTML to target page, style with CSS): e.g. Annotation as a page: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/Test_Annotation Transcluded in The Annotation page: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/The_Annotation Transcluded on target page, added HTML, styled with CSS: https://hub.xpub.nl/fabulousloopdeloop/index.php/W._Grey_Walter_%E2%80%93_The_Body_in_Pieces

2. with MediaWiki Semantic Text Annotator extension (needs to be installed on the server): https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Semantic_Text_Annotator

Styling: Test styling of H2/H3 and TOC Images to the right on Floop - this can be done by making images thumbnails using MediaWiki syntax (they can be styled so they appear as full-size images)

Main page: Floop icon? Curved line as abstract arrow?

Portapak page: Add images to page

To think about: Determine when to hide Mediawiki superflous bells and whistles When should this text become public? How should it become public?

    • styling of related links and images page
    • adjust line length on chapter pages
Help Steve with Bateson Graph (matrix)
e mail book (pdf) with page refs to copy pages.
    Simon as graph maker...

30-7-20

Things to do: Simon to work on reskinning options; experiment; General scheme of 'front page': move contents to right hand bar and images and tiltle to the left. Circle of images (loop). Continue gathering material for 'Related Links and Images'

Steve: continue editing texts and adding images to pages...place an image after every 1000 words. (left justified).

10-17 August = Reread Lacan material, edit and review Lacan chapters. General editing, footnotes &c

17-14 August = Reread Radical Software material and review chapter.General editing, footnotes &c

Previously on Floop Pad:

Hey SIMON Loving the SEER drawing on the 'front page'. he is CUTE!  :-)

I added the texts to the front page. This is in order to have the information together. We can change it later, of course.

I am off on holiday at the end of the week.

I will carry on editing and writing stuff while I'm away,
maybe we can meet on line for a brief chat on Wed or Thursday

LEVELS OF ABSTRACTION on the Floop wiki

1) images of machines / title

2) log lines of machines

3) contents / chapter outline

4) introduction

5) chapters

6) Annotations

The machine as log lines

The Governor in a steam engine regulated the flow of energy through a system. The governor carried news of change through the system and adapts to that change (feedback). In the 1900s some people thought that the adaptability and flexibility of governor followed the same principle of adaptability and flexibility that we see in the natural world.

The Cybernetic Tortoise was built in the late 1940s. It moved about, responding to light and touch. Did its movement demonstrate behaviour? Did its behaviour demonstrate thought?

SEER (SEquence Extrapolating Robot) was built in early 1950s. The machine played a simple guessing game with humans. Is SEER one of the first “thinking machines”?

The Structural Differential was built in 1924. It was a “plastic diagram” that helped users understand the difference between an object and the word representing that object.

The E-Meter (Electropsycometer) was built in the 1950s. It was used in Scientology auditing sessions. The E-Meter used feedback to regulate and monitor the actions and re-actions of the user.

The Homeostat was developed in the late 1940s. It explores the degree of self-organization afforded within a complex system. If you disturbed the homeostat, it would adapt and return to a stable state. Does the "mind" of this machine extend into its environment?

The Sony Portapak was a video system used in the 1960s and 1970s to develop community media. The video system allowed visions of an ecologically sustainable planet to be mapped on to media ecologies.

In present tense (better?): Present tense is more dramatic - it also gives the machines a kind of agency. But the problem is where the year is mentioned, however, as this roots the aspect of the sentence in the past. How about something like:

late 1940s The Cybernetic Tortoise moves about, responding to light and touch. Does its movement demonstrate behaviour?

   Yes! That's it.

Maybe embed this into the wiki (tortoise chapter)= actually, I say this but maybe we should steer clear of too many links that can go dead in the central text

HA! The guy Poundstone wrote the book which has SEER in it! Nice photos! Poundstone? Which book?

Poundstone, William. How to Predict the Unpredictable , Oneworld 2014. Ah yes - I didn't make the connection from the images I've been putting in the wiki that this was the same person! I've just found the book and put it in the bl: https://hub.xpub.nl/bootleglibrary/book/436

I love the way the diagrams grow in complexity on the wiki, btw.... Ha! thanks - yes it's interesting thinking of typologies of diagrams, e.g.:

   - operational
   - circuit
   - functional (e.g. showing how the machine works in 3D space)

Also occurred to me that the meta-diagram you made depicts a relational ecology of the machines as well, just as the above mentioned types of diagrams also have relational aspects (e.g. capacitors wired to other components) etc.
