Thousands of businesses were hit hard by the [/news/coronavirus/index.html coronavirus] pandemic, retail stores, pubs, gyms, and the travel and events industries to name a few, but there were others that adapted and grew - offering opportunities for many seeking to retrain.
New data reveals which industries expanded in the previous year to the point where workers are in demand and what skills are needed to succeed in these roles - some of which are offering six figures salaries. 
The Jobs on the Rise in 2021 report, released on Wednesday by LinkedIn, lists the 15 jobs that experienced the most growth between April and October 2020.

As travel restrictions and lockdowns continued throughout 2020 millions of Australians signed up to the federal government's JobKeeper and JobSeeker programs. 
With both schemes being gradually wound down this year, workers looking to get back on the job need to be aware of the employment market's shifting conditions. 
A common theme among the roles set to be in demand in 2021 is that many of them are able to be performed remotely, as offices sit empty across the country.
The industry that experienced the biggest demand for workers throughout 2020 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, the healthcare sector. 
Topping LinkedIn's list are mental health specialists such as counselors and psychologists - courtesy of a renewed focus by Australians on their mental well-being amid extended lockdowns and social distancing.

Skills for this job generally require university training but also garner a high hourly rate from clients of anywhere from $30 to $100 according to Payscale. 
Nurses and frontline medical staff, already experiencing a shortage of graduates before the Covid pandemic, are also in demand - with the government providing incentives to study the profession. 
GPs, while requiring more years of training than nurses and paramedics, can earn an average salary of $121,000. 
The construction industry was also high on the list with the federal and state governments planning billions of dollars in construction projects to help prop up the economy. 
The online retail industry boomed in 2020 with many business adapting to lockdown by shifting online - sparking a demand for people with tech know-how (file image) 
Construction site managers and estimators are heavily in demand for the new projects, according to LinkedIn, with each role offering six figure pay packets.  
Constructions workers and heavy equipment operators are also some of the most advertised jobs. 
The property sector also performed strongly despite Covid travel restrictions.
With people spending more of the week at home real estate agents and mortgage brokers are in demand as homeowners look to upgrade. 
And while brick-and-mortar retail stores did it tough in 2020, their online equivalents boomed - with many businesses turning to the digital space to adapt. 
A flood of digital roles are expected, especially in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, as online retail and content providers continue to gather steam. 
Digital content freelancers, social media and marketing whizzes, information tech engineers, and cyber-security experts are all expected to be in demand as more companies grow their online brands and move to keep up with consumers. 
The construction industry is also set to be one of the biggest areas for job growth in 2021 as federal and state governments allocate billions of dollars in projects to prop up the economy
